The purpose of this study is to identify the longitudinal effect of adverse childhood experience (ACE) at the age of 5 on school adjustment and social-emotional development of first and fourth graders of elementary school. For this purpose, data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Study (KCYPS) were used. The main results of the study are as follows. First, among the adverse childhood experience at the age of 5, mother¡¯s divorce experience, father¡¯s smoking, and depression negatively affected children¡¯s school adaptation, academic competence, and behavioral problems of first-year elementary school. In addition, at the age of 5, the mother¡¯s excessive drinking and depression were the strongest negative variable on children¡¯s school adjustment and behavioral problems of first-year elementary school. Second, the mother¡¯s divorce experience and father¡¯s smoking at the children¡¯s age of 5 negatively affected fourth-grade school adjustment, happiness, and academic competence. Mother¡¯s excessive drinking and father¡¯s depression at the children¡¯s age of 5 negatively affected school adjustment and academic competence. This study suggests the importance of mothers parenting at the lower grades of elementary school and the longitudinal effect of father¡¯s depression on children in the upper grades of elementary school.
